Lending a hand to a caregiver

The job is long and hard. The monetary pay is negligible. The hours are unpredictable. The work is emotional at best but would not be traded for the world. Being a caregiver to a parent or loved one during their final days is one of the last gifts of labor you give. Being by their side and providing their basic care can take a toll on your body and your emotions but most would gladly do it for their dear one. There is nothing more rewarding then spending their last days helping them. It helps you enter the grieving process smoother and begin to heal sooner.

Many of us have never been in that situation and while we want to help and relieve some of the duties, we don�t know what we can do or how to go about offering our help. Here is a list to get you started.

1. Offer to make meals, or prep special dietary meals. Cutting up veggies, or making soup. Making a meal for the caregiver or small snacks will help them keep their energy up.

2. Clean bathrooms, change sheets off the beds for visiting family, or put some laundry over. Find out what chores are most needed. This frees the caregiver up to give direct care to their loved one. If they can�t think of anything ask if it would be okay for you to look around for something needing to be done. Dusting, sweeping and mopping always need to be done.

3. Be willing to sit and talk with their loved one so to free the caregiver to run errands, or have a small break. They need to be able to reset once in a while.

4. Give the caregiver a basket of supplies to pamper themselves. Include items like bubble bath, salts, lotions, and sponges. If you know their taste in music, maybe a soothing CD.

The best gift anyone can give a caregiver, is to be willing. If they need an errand run, a bathroom cleaned, or some down time, knowing they can ask you gives them gifts beyond measure. Having a friend to which they can call any hour day or night gives them the support they need in order to provide the care they want to give their loved one.
