Sayings Of Comfort For Those That Are Grieving
The grief and pain that accompanies a loved ones death is indescribable in words. One must simply go through the process before they can truly empathize with another person's desperate feelings of despair during the bereavement period. Because you truly cannot feel their inner pain, what do you say? The following is a list of prayers and verses from the Christian Bible taken from a wonderful book by Hope Lyda called, "Prayers Of Comfort For Those Who Hurt." These simple sayings can be said, written or expressed to the bereaved to offer sincere, heartfelt sympathy for their loss.
- "Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me-put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you." PHILIPPIANS: 4:9
- "Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted." MATTHEW 5:4.
- "Heal me, O Lord, and I will be healed; save me and I will be saved, for you are the one I praise." JEREMIAH 17:14
- "Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit to sustain me." PSALM 51:12
- "Let the morning bring me word of your unfailing love, for I have put my trust in you. Show me the way I should go, for to you I lift up my soul." PSALM 143:8
This simple list of Bible verses may be just what they need to be reminded of God's healing power. One quick note, bereavement periods are not the time to preach. Some people who are grieving may not feel comforted by Bible versus. It is a best practice to use caution in this area. Giving them a sympathy gift book or sympathy gift baskets with books filled with comforting verses may be all that is needed. The person in need of comfort can choose to read these types of literature on their own and at their own pace.
However you choose to offer comfort, be sure to exhibit an open heart and listening ear. Be there for them throughout this difficult period. Call, write or send a sympathy greeting card. Let them know they are in your thoughts and prayers and that you are there when they need you.
